This is a question I hear quite a bit. In fact, many people assume I am Wiccan because I practice magick. So the answer is no. You do not have to be Wiccan to practice magick. Magickal practice holds to no religion. To me, magick is the spiritual part of ourselves and our acknowledgment of other realms outside of what we see. It’s understanding the power of our spiritual beings and creating our own reality using the tools provided by the universe such as rocks, feathers, fruits, moon cycles and your will.
Wicca is a religious belief system that finds its roots in ancient Celtic Society. Rituals and worship focus around gods and goddesses as well as nature. In addition there aren’t just “Wiccans” ,as the faith can then be broken down into different subgroups like Alexandrian, Celtic, Dianic, Gardnerian etc. Many Wiccans practice magick, and many do not.
Many people practice magick and are not Wiccan. 🙂 BUT if you practice magick (also called the Craft), you could be considered a witch…not necessarily Wiccan.
I think the Wiccan tradition is a beautiful one and holds many truths that I enjoy incorporating into my life. My favorite is “Harm None” and the “Rule of Three”. Good solid ideas to anyone practicing magick.
